Austin Fentrice Enzor

Austin Fentrice Enzor, 93 died peacefully Thursday, October 22, 2009 at Morehead Nursing Center in Eden, North Carolina. Mr. Enzor was born on August 24, 1916, in the Spring Branch community of Horry County, South Carolina. He was the third son of Q.M. and Leona Enzor of Nichols, SC. He was an honor graduate and outstanding athlete of Floyds High School and attended the Citadel on a scholarship. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps prior to World War II, serving as a radio operator and top gunner on the Liberator B-24 whose bombing missions were over Munich area of Germany. Mr. Enzor's plane was shot down which resulted in him being detained for 18 months as a prisoner at Stalag IV in Poland. He was moved along with 6,000 other POW's on a forced death march. After 86 days and an estimated 600 miles, and deaths of approximately 1,300 men, the POWs just marched into the glorious presence of American or British forces. Hr received the following medals for service rendered in World War II: Purple Heart, Air Medal with two Bronze Oak Leave Clusters, Prisoner of War Medal, European-African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, Army of Occupation Medal-Japan and an Honorable Service Button. Mr. Enzor continued his career in the Air Force, retiring as a Chief Warrant Officer after 30 years of service. Preceding him death was his first wife, Grace Hatchell Enzor of Nichols; brothers, Ernest, of Nichols and Roscoe , Elmer and Cecil of Fair Bluff, and a sister Jennie Lovette of Lumberton, NC. Surviving is his wife Faye Enzor of the home, two daughters Sherry Voris of Flat Rock,NC and Suzette Cook Hunt of Minneapolis, Minnesota, and a son Terry Enzor of Usk Washington; a step-daughter, Vanessa Wyatt Ingram of Eden, NC; three brothers, Luther and Herman Enzor of Nichols and Carol of Florence; two sisters, Pauline (Polly) Osborne of Columbia and Irene Luther of Nichols, SC; three grandchildren and six great grandchildren.. Graveside services with full military honors will be held at 2 PM Sunday, October 25, 2009 at Spring Branch Baptist Church Cemetery, Nichols SC, Dr. Floyd Enzor and Rev. Jonathan Barbee will officiate. The family will receive friends from 6 - 8 PM Saturday, October 24, 2009 at the funeral home. The family would like to express heart-felt appreciation to the doctors and staff of Morehead Medical Center and the Morehead Nursing Center.
