Billy B Hammond, age 85, of 117 NE 18th Street, Oak Island, NC 28465, passed away at Huntersville Oaks Long Term Care Center on Monday March 9, 2009. Mr. Hammond, loving father, husband, and friend was born in Fair Bluff, NC on April 24, 1923 and was the son of the late Bill Hammond and Sally Parker. He is survived by two loving children, Deborah (Hammond) Morrell of Candler, NC and William B Hammond of Charlotte; and four grandchildren, Erin, Emily, David, and Mary Grace. Mr. Hammond served his country proudly in the Navy during World War II, primarily in the South Pacific. Prior to joining the service he worked at the Wilmington Shipyard building liberty ships for the war effort. Following the war he attended Wilmington College (UNC-W) then made a career as an architectural draftsman, where he designed facades for buildings that now stand all over the eastern US as lasting memorials to his exacting work. Mr. Hammond made lifelong friends easily, and will be remembered for his dry wit, his warm affection for all God's creatures great and small, and his love for the ocean surf and salt air. A memorial service will be held at Meares Funeral Home, Street, on Saturday, March 14, 2009 at 2pm with Dr. Floyd Enzor officiating. A graveside service will follow at Powell Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, 1 Billy Graham Parkway, Charlotte, NC 28201 or Samaritan's Purse, P.O. Box 3000, Boone, NC, 28607-3000.
