Herman Dow Enzor, Sr., age 91, of Horry County, South Carolina, passed away peacefully, leaving behind a legacy of service and dedication. Born on August 31,1933, in Horry County, SC, Herman was raised in the Spring Branch Community as one of fourteen children. He spent his life in this close-knit community, where he farmed alongside his family.
In 1958, Herman began his distinguished career as a constable under the Honorable Jack Hooks. The following year, he became one of the original eight police officers for the newly established Horry County Police Department. Over the next 40 years, Herman dedicated himself to serving the citizens of Horry County, rising through the ranks to the position of Chief and ultimately retiring as Major. His tenure was marked by significant milestones, including the hiring of the department's first female officer and the first African American officer, as well as implementing shifts that enhanced departmental efficiency.
Beyond his law enforcement career, Herman was a devoted member of Spring Branch Baptist Church, serving as a deacon for over fifty years. He was also an esteemed Free Mason with Loris Lodge No. 205, dedicating more than sixty years to the organization. He continued to serve on various boards and committees.
He served with the National Guard for many years. Herman was also a dedicated funeral assistant at Meares & Jones Funeral Service in Fair Bluff, NC.
Herman was predeceased by his beloved parents, Quittie Enzor and Leona Joiner Enzor, and his cherished wife, Patricia Enzor. He is survived by his two children: daughter Dana Enzor of Nichols, SC, and son Dowe Enzor of Green Sea, SC. He leaves behind a legacy of love through his five grandchildren: Amber (Jamie), Zachery (Hunter), Hailey (Jason), Sage, and Hayden, as well as five great-grandchildren: Abbi, Kinslei, Madden, Zoey, and Lizzie.
The family would like to extend special thanks to his caretakers, Mrs. Lou Greene and Ms. Nikki Williams, for their exceptional love, care, and compassion.
Herman Dow Enzor, Sr. will be remembered for his unwavering commitment to his community, his pioneering spirit in law enforcement, and the love he shared with his family and friends. His impact on Horry County will not be forgotten.
Funeral services will be, January 6th, 2025 at 3PM in the Spring Branch Baptist Church, Nichols, SC. Visitation will be from 1PM until 2:45PM in the church sanctuary. Burial will immediately follow the service in the church cemetery.
