Mrs. Mary Thompson Meares, 89 of Cerro Gordo died Friday January 16, 2009. She was born July 6, 1919 in Columbus County, the daughter of the late Henry Thompson and Lannie Nobles Thompson. She was the widow of Keiver Meares. Graduating from Cerro Gordo High School in 1936, she was the valedictorian of her class. A homemaker and long-time adult Sunday School teacher, she was well-known for her extensive visitation of shut-ins. She was preceded in death by a brother, Berry Thompson. Three sisters: Alice Green, Doris Herring and Frostie Lupton, and a grandson Christopher Keel. Final rites will be held at 2 PM on Sunday January 18, 2009 at Hinson's Crossroads Baptist Church in Fair Bluff with the Revs. Sean Roberds and Billy Stines officiating. Interment will follow in the Meares Cemetery. She is survived by a son, Henry Meares and wife, Oleta of Cerro Gordo, two daughters: Macie Keel and husband, Lowell of Charlotte, Annette Spence and husband, Robert of Whiteville: One brother. Glen Thompson and wife, Grey of Cerro Gordo, two sisters: Dorcas Hammond and husband, Owen of Fair Bluff and Amelita Hawkins of Raleigh, five grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren. The family will receive friends on Saturday January 17, 2009 from 6:30 - 8 PM the funeral home.
