Mr. Michael V. Byrd, age 88, of Causey Rd, Fair Bluff, died Tuesday, May 3, 2016 in the Columbus Regional Medical Center, Whiteville, N.C. Born in Rockingham County, he was the son of the late Michael Byrd and Bernice Nye Byrd and the widower of Mary Hargrave Byrd.

He is survived by one son: Michael K. Byrd of the home, and a daughter, Kay of Wilmington, N.C.; one brother: Danny Byrd of Hamlet, N.C.: and one grandchild.

In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters: Pat and Margaret.

Mr. Byrd was a World War II veteran. He was one of the brave young men that stormed the shores of Iwo Jima. He was also a 20 year veteran of the North Carolina Highway Patrol, having served in both Robeson and Columbus Counties.

Visitation will be held Thursday, May 5, 2016 from 7 PM to 9 PM in the Meares Funeral Home of Fair Bluff.

Funeral services will be held Friday, May 6, 2016 at 2PM in the Meares Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in the Powell Cemetery, Fair Bluff, N.C.
