Olene Hammond Mercer, 87 of Fair Bluff died Friday May 25, 2012 at Liberty Commons Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Whiteville. Mrs. Mercer was born in Columbus County a daughter of the late Robert L. and Esselle Purvis Hammond. Mrs. Mercer worked as the office manager for Dr. W.L. Barefoot in Whiteville. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by a brother Eugene Hammond (Alease) and a sister Lou Ella Hammond. Funeral services will be held at 2 PM Sunday May 27, 2012 at Meares Funeral Home, Rev. Eric Truesdale will officiate. Burial will follow in the Meares Cemetery. Surviving are her son, Danny Ray Mercer and his wife Lee of Prosperity SC; 2 sisters, Edna Bullard and her husband James of Fair Bluff, Carolyn Burchette and her husband Jack of Hallsboro; 2 grandchildren, Robert W. Mercer, Nickels Mercer; 2 great grandchildren Callie and John Adam and several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends following the service at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to a charity of one's choice.
