Simon Sutton Herring Jr.

Simon Sutton Herring, Jr., age 91, affectionately known as "Papa," peacefully and permanently closed the doors to " Ye Ole Workshop" on Tuesday, December 17, 2019. Simon was born on October 11, 1928 in Fair Bluff, N.C., to the late Simon Sutton Herring Sr. and the late Pattie Connor Herring. He was the husband of the late Margaret Ellis Herring. In addition to his wife of 64 years, he was predeceased by sons: Gerald and Ronnie, four brothers, and three sisters.

Simon enlisted in the Navy in 1948 and served his country in the Korean conflict and the Vietnam War during his 21 years of devoted service. After returning from the Navy, he served as finance officer for the town of Fair Bluff and later as supervisor for Moore Gardner and Associates.

A lifelong resident of Fair Bluff, Simon loved to hunt, fish, carpentry work, or just tell stories of his childhood and family. If anyone ever stopped by the Herring residence, you rarely found Simon in the house. You would just follow the whistle of that familiar tune we all knew so well and you would find him in " Ye Ole Workshop" doing what he loved best. He was quite the talent.

He is survived by one daughter; Jeanne "Cricket" ( Johnny ) Britt; daughter-in-law Becky " Becky Lou" Herring; one sister, Edna " Sweet " ( Jim ) Morton. Also surviving are grandchildren: Ashley " Sunshine" Memory, Lindsey "Punkin" Willis, Jonathan "Peeper" Britt,  Amber "Bubbles" Adelman; and six great grandchildren.

Graveside services will be conducted in the Powell Cemetery, Fair Bluff, N.C., Friday, December 20, 2019, at 2 PM. with military honors.
