Troy "Shorty" McDuffie Hammond, Jr., 81, passed away Saturday, December 11, 2010, at his home. He was the son of the late Troy McDuffie Hammond, Sr. and Kate Osbourne Hammond. As a volunteer fireman for Cerro Gordo Fire and Rescue, Hammond spent decades dedicating his time and service to his community. Hammond's family and friends loved him because he was not only a kind and generous man; Mr. Hammond was also a light-hearted and witty man, who took pride in making those around him embrace the beauties of nature and the glories of God. Hammond made himself a great man by encouraging those around him to be better individuals. It is as Winston Churchill once said, "We make a life by what we give." Hammond was a giver (in every sense), and as a result of this, he will be remembered fondly by those who had the honor and the privilege of knowing him. Funeral Services will be held at 2 PM Wednesday December 15, 2010 at the Cerro Gordo United Methodist Church, Rev. Neill Smith will officiate. Burial will follow in the Powell Cemetery , Fair Bluff. Mr Hammond is survived by his sisters Mable Hammond Chamblee and Janice Hammond Spivey of Fairmont; his daughter-in-law, Pamela Edwards Hammond; and his three granddaughters Joanna Alena Hammond, Amanda Lauren Stocks, and Stephanie Heather Leigh Anne Hammond. Mr Hammond was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Joanne Kellihan Hammond, and their son, Dale McDuffie Hammond. The family will receive friends from 7 until 9PM Tuesday, December 14, 2010 at Meares Funeral Home 795 Main Street, Fair Bluff NC.
