Will Hammond Obituary

Will R. "Jerry" Hammond, age 88, of Nichols, SC, died Saturday, February 10, 2024 in Mcleod Hospice Center, Florence, SC. making Heaven a little sweeter. Born December 18, 1935 in Horry County, SC, he was the son of the late Emory Hammond and Bertie Edwards Hammond. He is also predeceased by brothers; Billie Hammond, Guy Hammond, Charlie Hammond and sisters; Christine Hammond and Judy Hammond.

Will attended Spring Branch School and then Floyds school. Leaving High School in the eleventh grade to help support his family, he joined the Army. After he was discharged, he continued in the Army Reserves, at which time he met and married Mary Shelly on March 28, 1964. They remained together for the remainder of his life, almost 60 years.

Will farmed in the early years of his adulthood on the family farm, but later began to do construction. He helped develop the North Myrtle Beach, SC and the Myrtle Beach, SC areas before they developed into what we see today. He decided to go out on his own to build single family homes, becoming the "builder" everyone came to. Will built homes well into his 70's, even though he was not comfortable doing the climbing and lifting he use to.

In his last years, he enjoyed spending time with his wife and beloved dog and constant companion, Bandit. He enjoyed Facebook, watching every cowboy movie on TV, cutting grass, Sunday dinners with Mary, daughter Mindy, and son-in-law Bill. He also enjoyed get-togethers with family, neighbors, and friends in the house he built for himself and Mary just for that purpose.

Will was a lifetime member of Spring Branch Baptist Church, which his family helped establish and the fellowship hall he built.

He was a daddy and uncle to everyone he became acquainted with, whether family, neighbor, or friend. He was spiritual in his own way, sending up prayers on bended knees for everyone on his heart on a daily basis. Will was always willing to help or offer advice to anyone that needed it or asked for it. He leaves a deep void in the lives of his family and everyone that knew him and was blessed to spend time with him.

Will is survived by his wife, Mary Hammond of the home; daughter, Melinda (Bill) Lane of Fairmont, NC; sister Ronnie Sue Hammond (Randy Duncan) of Grassy Bay, SC; and sister-in-law Queta Bass (Hallon Junior).

The family would like to extend their appreciation to the McLeod Hospice House for all they did in Will's final days. They help to keep him comfortable and peaceful and helped his family ease into life without him.

In lieu of flowers, the family ask that donations in honor of Will, be directed to: Hammond Cemetery Fund 6401 Overbrook Shortcut Rd. Nichols, SC 29581 in care of Fran Huggins.

A graveside service will be conducted, Tuesday, February, 13, 2024 at 11AM in the Hammond Cemetery, 8460 Spring Branch Rd. Nichols, SC, 29581. Visitation will be held one hour prior in the cemetery.
